Sani-Check YM: Test Kit for Counting Yeasts and Molds

The growth of mold in the industrial environment is often responsible for extensive losses in productivity. When populations of mold and yeast become elevated in stored hydrocarbon fuels, metalworking fluid, and process waters, serious economic consequences can result. Problems related to high levels of mold include slime formation, offensive odors and plugging of fluid delivery lines.   Effective control of these organisms through biocide use is only possible when routine monitoring of fungal levels is performed. Sani-Check YM makes routine determinations of fungal populations quick and easy.

Sani-Check YM test systems are kits that contain flexible plastic strips to which nutrient-containing filter paper is attached. The kits are complete and ready to use. No special equipment or training is necessary. In addition to testing liquids, Sani-Check YM is suitable for checking the sanitary quality of hard surfaces, particularly in the food processing industry. The flexibility of the strip makes it ideal for sampling hard to reach areas.

The designation YM stands for yeast and mold. Yeasts and molds are closely related organisms and generally require the same conditions for growth. Sani-Check YM is able to detect a broad range of these microbes which are implicated in contamination of the industrial environment. Examples of yeast are included in the genera of Candida, Trichosporon and Saccharomyces. Examples of molds are included in the genera Fusarium, Cephalosporium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium

Most yeasts and molds possess the ability to form black spots on the Sani-Check YM test strip. The number of spots along with the degree of graying of the background can be used to derive a quantitative measurement of yeast and/or mold growth. Following incubation, the strip is compared to an interpretation chart on the label. The value obtained from the chart allows for an estimated yeast/mold count to be made.

Sani-Check YM is a dehydrated product and is thus quite stable. It requires no refrigeration and has a room temperature shelf life of two years.
